Penrose Cottage is ideally situated for exploring many of the wonderful beaches and coastline of both Cornwall and Devon. From panoramic sweeping bays to secluded sheltered coves, the South-West coast is home to some of the UK’s finest beaches. So whether it’s adventure or relaxation you are after, all are available, most within an hours drive of Penrose Cottage.

Crackington Haven

Just 8 miles north of the cottage is Crackington haven. It’s a good sandy beach with two good Cafes and a Pub, the Coombe Barton Inn. The cafes do great food all day and the pub is open all day. A very pretty spot with a good carpark, but small so get there early. The beach does not have any Lifeguards so beware when bathing / surfing.

Bude

Bude Main Beach is great for swimming and surfing with plentiful parking, RNLI lifeguards and ice cream shops. It has the added advantage of a sea water swimming pool that has been recently refurbished.

Widemouth

Widemouth Bay, there are two beaches at Widemouth separated by a ridge of rocks in the beach. Black Rock beach is the most westerly and is dog friendly all year round. Both beaches are covered by RNLI lifeguards but Main beach only permits dogs between October and Easter. Both beaches offer eat swimming and surfing, Black rock has the advantage of having great rock pools for crabs and rock fishing.

Villages

Boscastle

Boscastle, made famous by the floods of 2004 is a great day out with the harbour and shops, a large carpark for easy parking and lots to see.

Tintagel

Tintagel, the famous seat of King Arthurs Castle is an amazing day out. The caste now accessed by the spectacular footbridge recreating the original access to the castle. It is here where History meets Legend the historic castle and dramatic cliffs and the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round table.
